Mike McCarthy

Michael James McCarthy Obituary

Michael James McCarthy, 79, of Glen Allen, Va., departed this Earth after a long illness on November 25, 2024. Born in Oneida, NY on December 12, 1944, to Richard and Margaret Whittaker McCarthy, he made a home in Rome, NY after marrying the love of his life, Gail Egan McCarthy, on June 21, 1969. They spent 34 wonderful years together, raising their three children.

Educated in Oneida schools, Mike enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1963 and proudly served four years, receiving a National Defense Service Medal. He received post-secondary education at Mohawk Valley Community College and received certificates in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, and Small Engine Repair. A patriot, Mike was a member of The American Legion.

A skilled tradesman, he had experience in plumbing, carpentry and electrical maintenance, but spent most of his working years at companies that included Pettibone Corporation, Miller Brewing, Sal Caruso Cheese and Owens-Illinois, primarily in warehouse operations. His last position before retirement was facility maintenance for Betsy Ross Rehabilitation Center.

His love for cars and his ability to build just about anything was only surpassed by the love for his family. He was especially proud of his three children Bonnie, Mike Jr., and Tom and taught them everything from car maintenance to roof repair. Mike loved to be of service - to his family, his friends, his community. He was quick to offer his construction and repair skills to anyone in need and did so well into his seventies.

Mike was predeceased by his loving wife, Gail, and his brothers, Rick, Joe and John. Surviving are his children: Bonnie (Scott), Mike Jr. (Chanel), and Tom (Trish), seven grandchildren: Iverson, Roberta, Destiny, Terrence, Adrien, Billy and Sophia, and three great-grandchildren: Emmery, Jonah and Noah. He is survived by brothers David (Donna), Alan, Dennis (Sue), Kevin, Pat and his sister Mary; and countless nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

The family would like to thank the many health care providers at Central Virginia VA Health Care System, Faith and Alexis at James River Home Health and Hospice, Joyce at Companion Extraordinaire Home Care Services and Meredith at Amada Senior Care for their dedicated care during these last several months. A celebration of Michael's life will take place 1 p.m., Thursday, December 12, 2024 at Bliley's Funeral Home and Cremation, 8510 Staples Mill Road, Richmond, VA 23228.
